There are two different types of Group Puzzles books available, variation books and level books, each of which serves a different purpose.
Variation Books. These books have titles that always begin "Variations on ..." and are often available as freely distributable PDF files. They are intended to be an inexpensive way to sample a selection of different types of puzzles at all possible difficulty levels. Using this type of book, a reader can discover what difficulty level is most appropriate for them for each of the different puzzle types in the book. The "Variations" books often include puzzles with only a certain range of puzzle sizes and the title of each is chosen to indicate the expected difficulty and audience as shown in this table:
Book Title | Group Sizes | Puzzle Sizes |
Variations on Junior Sudoku Logic Puzzles | 4-6 | 4x4 thru 6x6 |
Variations on Intermediate Sudoku Logic Puzzles | 7-8 | 7x7 thru 8x8 |
Variations on Sudoku Logic Puzzles | 9 | 9x9 |
Variations on Sudoku-by5 Logic Puzzles | 9 | 21x21 |
Variations on Advanced Sudoku Logic Puzzles | 10-16 | 10x10 thru 16x16 |
The Variation books in this list are arranged in increasing order of difficulty. Puzzles with smaller group sizes or puzzle sizes are more appropriate for younger or more inexperienced solvers.
Level Books. Each of these books contains only puzzles that fall within a narrow range of difficulty levels, as indicated by the first word of the title. For example, "Easy Sudoku Logic Puzzles" contains only Sudoku puzzles that require 3 or 4 steps to solve and "Tournament Sudoku Logic Puzzles" contains only puzzles that require 21 through 29 steps. The word chosen to indicate the range of puzzle difficulties for each book is described here. The idea behind level-books is that they do not require you to buy a book with puzzles at many levels even though you only enjoy working at one specific levels, like "Medium" or "Hard." Level books contain puzzles of the same size, and often only a single puzzle type, as well as a narrow range of difficulty ratings. One type of level book with more than one puzzle type is signature puzzle books, which are constructed around a theme word, such as 'Education'. These books may contain several different underlying puzzle types of the same size, such as Sudoku, HyperSudoku, and Sudoku-X all featuring the same theme word 'Education'. Even though this type of level book contains several different related puzzle types, it will still feature only puzzles in a narrow range of difficultly levels as indicated by the book title.
